Jyotirlinga is the linga of Lord Shankar which has appeared spontaneously. There are 12 such Jyotirlinga in India.



The same 12 Jyotirlinga are described in a slightly different order in Shatrudrasamhita Chapter 42, Shlok 2-4 of Shiv Purana, the list of Jyotirlinga according to the same order: Somnath, Nageshwar, Mahakaleshwar, Mallikarjuna, Bhimashankar, Omkareshwar , Kedarnath, Vishwanath, Trimbakeshwar, Dhrishneshwar, Rameshwar, Baidyanath.

1. Somnath Mahadev

The first darshan of Somnath is usually done on a pilgrimage to the Jyotirlinga. The temple was demolished 16 times and has a rich tradition and history. It is located at Prabhas-Patan (Somnath-Veraval) in the state of Gujarat in western India.

5. Kedarnath Mahadev

Kedarnath in Uttarakhand is known as the northernmost Jyotirlinga and closest to the eternal abode of Mount Kailash of Lord Shiva. Kedarnath is a part of the Chota Char Dham pilgrimage circuit of Hinduism. Nestled in the snow-capped Himalayas, Kedarnath is an ancient pilgrimage site, rich in mythology and tradition. It can be reached here only six months in a year. It is one of the Padal Petra Stalam of Vada Nadu mentioned in Thevaram. Shiva took the form of a wild boar and dives into the earth at Kedarnath to emerge at Pashupatinath. Pure ghee is applied on the Shivling of Kedarnath when the pig is injured.

6. Bhimashankar Mahadev

There is a lot of discussion about Bhimashankar. There is a Bhimashankar temple near Pune (pictured) in Maharashtra, which was known as Dakini Desh, but Kashipur in Uttarakhand was also known as Dakini Desh in ancient days and known as Shri Moteshwar Mahadev Bhimashankar temple is present there. 7. Kashi Vishwanath Mahadev

The Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh is home to the Vishwanath Jyotirlinga Temple, perhaps the most sacred of the Hindu temples. It is one of the Padal Petra Stalam of Vada Nadu mentioned in Thevaram. It is located in Deoghar in Santhal Pargana Division of Jharkhand state, India. 10. Nageshwar Mahadev

Nageshwar Jyotirlinga is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga temples mentioned in Shiva Purana and Dwadash Jyotirlinga Stotram, a Jyotirlinga said to be located in Nagesh Daruka-Vana and possibly located in the present Dwarka region. Other claims for the status of Nagesh Jyotirlinga come - Aundha Nagnath (Hingoli district of Maharashtra) and Jageshwar (Almora district of Uttarakhand).
