The Shiv Purana is one of the eighteen major Puranas, a genre of Sanskrit texts in Hinduism, and part of the Shaivism literature collection. It mainly centers around the Hindu god Shiva and the goddess Parvati, but references and honors all deities.
Shiv Purana claims that it once consisted of 100000 verses prescribed in twelve samhitas (books). It is said that Lord Shiva himself said it according to the great sage Veda Vyasa, who summarized and taught it to his disciple Romaharshana. Surviving manuscripts exist in many different volumes and contents, with one major edition with seven books (traced to South India), the other with six books, while the third edition is in the medieval Bengal region of the Indian subcontinent. , in which there are no books, but two large ones. Two editions which contain books, some books have the same title and others have different titles. The Shiva Purana, like other Puranas in Hindu literature, was edited by Ved Vyasa in every era so as not to "diminish its usefulness as a work of authority". The earliest manuscript of the surviving texts was likely estimated by Claus Klostermayr around the 10th to 11th centuries. Some chapters of the currently surviving Shiva Purana manuscripts were written after the 14th century CE.
The Shiva Purana contains chapters with topics such as cosmology, mythology, the relationship between gods, ethics, yoga, tirtha (pilgrimage) sites, devotion, rivers and geography, and others. The text is an important source of historical information on the various types and theology behind Shaivism in the early 1st millennium BC. Important among the oldest surviving chapters of the Shiva Purana is the Advaita Vedanta philosophy, mixed with theistic elements of devotion.
