Digital payment has revolutionized the way India transacts. From buying groceries to refueling at petrol stations, UPI and card payments have become everyday essentials. But starting May 10, 2025, Maharashtra is witnessing a surprising rollback — no more UPI or card payments at several fuel stations.

Breaking News: No UPI or Card Payments at Petrol Pumps ?

⚠️ Why the Ban on UPI and Cards?

The answer lies in one of today’s biggest financial threats — cyber fraud. Fuel station owners are bearing the brunt of increasing online transaction scams. According to the Vidarbha Petroleum Dealers Association, many dealers have lost significant revenue due to fake screenshots, unauthorized reversals, and bank account freezes.

Scammers often use hacked cards, stolen credentials, or manipulated apps to simulate payments. Later, when customers report unauthorized activity, banks reverse the transactions, leaving the dealers high and dry — and very frustrated.

🚫 What Payment Methods Will Be Affected?

  • UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm
  • Credit and Debit Cards (Visa, MasterCard, RuPay)
  • Net Banking

Cash will be the only accepted mode at participating pumps — at least for now.

🔥 Where Is It Happening First?

This decision is being implemented in Nashik, Nagpur, Pune, and other parts of Vidarbha. The Federation of All Maharashtra Petroleum Dealers Association confirmed the move and hinted it might spread further if no government intervention happens soon.

💸 Financial Damage from Cyber Scams

Dealers say these digital payment scams are not just annoying — they're financially devastating. Multiple pump owners have seen their entire bank accounts frozen due to unresolved UPI disputes. With no payment and no cash flow, running a fuel station becomes nearly impossible.

📢 What Dealers Are Saying

Vijay Thakre, President of Nashik Petrol Pump Dealers Association, explains: "Earlier it used to be just ₹50 or ₹100 scams, but now it’s ₹5,000, ₹10,000 or more. We can’t afford these repeated losses.”

🏦 What About the Government?

The dealer associations have written to the government seeking immediate action. Until proper fraud protection laws or secure payment systems are in place, they’re holding off on digital transactions.

👥 How Will It Affect Customers?

Imagine this: you pull into a petrol pump, phone in hand, ready to scan a QR code… only to be told: "Sorry, cash only!"

This change can lead to:

  • Increased ATM withdrawals and queues
  • Inconvenience for customers without cash
  • More cash-handling risks for fuel stations

🛡️ The Bigger Picture: Is Digital India in Danger?

India has led the world in UPI adoption. But unless digital payments are made more secure, such backlashes will continue. With high CPC concerns like cyber security, payment fraud, and financial compliance coming to the forefront, it’s time for stronger policies.

📊 What’s Next?

The Federation has made it clear: no secure solution, no digital payments. This move might look small, but if it spreads nationwide, it could disrupt the very vision of a cashless economy.

💬 Final Thoughts

This isn't just a policy issue — it’s a wake-up call. For consumers, it’s a reminder to always carry some cash. For authorities, it's a demand for robust fraud protection mechanisms. And for digital India? Well,
